Anyone who has ever experienced a middle or inner ear infection knows the pain and uncomfortable feelings associated with it. Now imagine not beginning able to communicate this pain with others.

This is exactly how your dog feels when he has an ear infection. The first and often most difficult step in treating a middle or inner ear infection in a dog is identifying the signs and symptoms that indicate that your dog has one. If left untreated, these infections can lead to much worse issues.

The first signs to look for that suggest your dog may be experiencing ear pain are head shaking, scratching at the ear, discharge from the ear, or inflammation of the face and side of the head. Any of these signs may indicate that the dog has an ear infection. Abnormal earwax build up that has a foul odor often indicates that an infection inside the ear is present.

Middle and inner ear infections in dogs are caused by some form of infection that started on the outer ear and then progressed inward to the inner ear. Anytime that an obvious infection exists on the outside of the ear, be certain to treat it promptly before the infection moves to the inner ear. Infections from ear mites, allergies, improper hygiene, and poor environmental conditions can all lead to middle and infer ear infections in dogs. In most cases, these infections are not caused by bacterial infections as seen in humans.

Adult Ear Infection

Though adults are not affected as frequently as children, it is important for adults to be aware of how adult ear infection can affect them. Adult ear infection is caused by infection in the Eustachian tube, near the inner ear. The Eustachian tube connects the inner ear to the nasal passages in order to drain fluid from the ears and equalize pressure between outside and inside of the body, but when fluid or mucous builds up in the Eustachian tube, it is an easy target for infection.

There are many situations in which adult ear infection can surface. A cold can cause fluid build up and infection in the Eustachian tube. Post nasal drip may also contribute. An adult does not necessarily need to be sick to get adult ear infection. Often, the infection is caused by mucous being blown into the Eustachian tubes by blowing the nose or failing to clean the liquid out of the ear with a cotton swab after showering.

Children tend to get a lot of ear infections. This is because children don't have an immune system. They have to get ailments and illnesses so their immune system can get some practice.

It's a bit like learning to ride a bicycle. You need to fall off a few times before you get the hang of it. This is why it is so important to allow your child to get illnesses and not to interfere unless you absolutely have to.

That is one of the reasons why vaccinations are so harmful. They stop your child's immune system learning how to throw off pathogensand viruses. That makes an unhealthy adult, one who succumbs to any passing illness, instead of being able to throw them off.

Treatment:

Generally, antibiotics are prescribed for treating ear infections. In some cases antihistamines and decongestants may be prescribed. Apart from the above medications your physician may prescribe pain relievers (usually ear drops) and other medications to relieve fever. Surgery is recommended rarely, only in cases where infections do not respond the medications.
