Food poisoning - Causes and Treatment

By ronnish at 2009-10-30 02:17:36
Food poisoning is the result of eating food or drinking water contaminated with bacteria (usually the salmonella strain). Depending on the severity of the case, the symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, fever or dehydration. In most cases, food poisoning is not a life-threatening condition. It generally runs its course within 24 hours from when the first symptoms appear. Therefore, natural cures used to treat food poisoning are mainly designed to shorten the period of discomfort and minimize the symptoms.

When people set foot in a restaurant, eatery, or fast-food establishment, they have a reasonable expectation that the food served to them will be clean, properly prepared, and free from any harmful viruses or bacteria. When contaminated food is served to a person, the results may range from slight illness and nausea to severe illness and injury. Regardless, food poisoning is a serious issue and should be avoided at all costs.

Food poisoning occurs when infectious or toxic agents are introduced to items of food that are subsequently consumed by people. Infectious agents often include viruses, parasites, or bacteria, while toxic agents are often poisons or dangers that arise in exotic or improperly prepared foods.
The feeling of a rumbling stomach followed by nausea, vomiting, cramping and diarrhea hours after a scrumptious meal is unfortunately an all too common one. This type of sickness is brought on by food and is referred to as food poisoning. While this is a common condition and usually a fairly mild one, food poisoning can, in some cases, lead to serious illness and even death.

Restaurant owners and employees should take precautions to protect their patrons and guests at all times. Food preparation and cooking surfaces should be kept clean at all times and kitchens should be free of contaminants and hazardous materials. Restaurant owners should make sure that all employees have undergone adequate food preparation courses and are aware of proper cooking procedures for each item on the menu.

Restaurant employees are the first line of defense against food-borne illness and should make sure that all items served have been properly handled from start to finish. If employees are negligent with food items or if they intentionally introduce harmful ingredients into the food, the restaurant may be held liable for injuries to the patrons.

Signs of food poisoning may range from mild to life threatening. Vomiting, fever, diarrhea, nausea, cramping are all signs of poisoning. Remember you many suffer from only a few of the symptoms or all of the symptoms. Generally symptoms come on withing 48 hours after eating or drinking the contaminated foods/drinks.

Poisoning may occur a number of ways , there are over 250 different diseases that can cause food poisoning. Bacteria in water, toxins in foods, foods not cooked to high enough temperatures, lack of hygiene by food preparers, lack of cleanliness where food is prepared, contamination by other animals such as rats or mice, lack of refrigeration, and cross contamination of uncooked foods with cooked foods.

While most people typically recover from food poisoning on their own without outside treatment, some severe cases will require professional medical attention. In general, however, most people are advised to follow these guidelines to avoid the worsening of symptoms and to have the speediest recovery possible:

• Avoid dehydrating agents such as caffeine
• Avoid dairy products, as they can upset the stomach
• Avoid solid foods until the worse of the diarrhea has passed
• Make sure you replace your lost fluids
Of course, if your condition persists or worsens over time, you should visit a doctor.
